Arch, and Mohammad Tadayyon Anti-Obesity Drugs: A Critical Review of Current Therapies and Future Opportunities. (... a lengthy review of the drugs currently available for the treatment of obesity. The authors--who are all employed by a large pharmaceutical company--state that there has generally been limited progress in developing effective drugs for treating obesity despite the large increase in the incidence of obesity, both in the Western world and in developing third world countries, over the last 25 years. Recently, however, the authors state that there has been a considerable increase in knowledge about obesity due to research carried out at the genetic level. This increase in knowledge has spurred research toward developing new drugs that are aimed at the regulation of feeding behaviour and cellular mechanisms involved in energy expenditure. According to the authors, compared with the last 25 years, the future offers more hope for the development of effective drugs for treating obesity.
