Petchey Merging Perspectives on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning. (... a short report on The Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning: Synthesis and Perspectives conference held in Paris, France from 6-9 December 2000. Participants at the conference discussed and debated about when and how biodiversity matters to ecosystem functioning. That is, the relationship between biodiversity and the magnitude and stability of ecosystem processes, such as primary productivity, decomposition, and nutrient cycling. Ecologists have argued about whether a relationship between diversity and ecosystem functioning exists. Evidence was presented both about situations where increased diversity of plants or animals improved the functioning of the surrounding ecosystem, and situations where diversity matters little or not at all to ecosystem functioning. Many conference participants suggested that to predict changes in ecosystem functioning due to disturbance [whether caused by humans or not], studies need to consider the effects of changes in the composition [as well as the richness] of diversity and the direct effects of disturbance. Conference attendees did agree that regardless of the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, there are plenty of ethical and aesthetic motives for slowing the rate of human-driven biodiversity loss.
