Editorial: Emerging Infections -- Another Warning. (... in 1992, the Institute of Medicine in the United States issued a landmark report entitled Emerging Infections: Microbial Threats to Health in the United States. The report discussed the reemergence of many infectious diseases thought previously to be extinct in the world or nearly so. Many factors were cited as encouraging the reemergence of these infections including changes in our society like rapid population growth and the migration of large numbers of people, the overuse of antibiotics by humans and in animals used for food production, climate change, etc. This editorial reviews what progress has been made in the intervening years to begin to combat the health threat imposed by these infectious diseases and the microorganisms that spawn them. The author reviews 5 studies [4 from the same issue of the journal] that illustrate the difficulty of combating or even attempting to contain this problem. The author states even with intelligent and extensive efforts by both the public and private sectors [since 1992], the rapidly changing world we live in tends to favor infectious agents. In addition, after almost a decade of battling emerging infections, it seems that the factors supporting their occurrence have only become more common and complicated--from the text of the article)
