Committee on Defining Science-Based Concerns Associated with Products of Animal Biotechnology, Committee on Agricultural Biotechnology, Health, and the Environment, National Research Council, National Academies of Science (of the United States)

Animal Biotechnology: Science Based Concerns. (... a thorough look at the science-based and policy-related concerns about animal biotechnology by the U.S. National Academies of Science. The committee who put together the report described a number of concerns about genetically engineered animals including the ability of certain genetically engineered organisms to escape and reproduce in the natural environment. Genetically engineered insects, shellfish, fish, and other animals that can easily escape, that are highly mobile, and that become feral easily are of particular concern, especially if they are more successful at reproduction than their natural counterparts. Additional concerns included possible human health effects, the need for adequate controls and restrictions on the use of genetically engineered animals, and the potential for adverse effects on animal welfare. Other keywords and phrases -- allergic, cattle, clone, cloned, clones, cloning, cow, cows, livestock, salmon, transgenic -- from the text of the description of the book on the National Academies Press Web site and a press release concerning the book [please see below])
