Nut and Peanut Butter Consumption and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Women. (... the authors set out to test the relationship between nut consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes in women. A total of 83,818 women aged 34 to 59 years from 11 states of the United States completed a validated dietary questionnaire at baseline in 1980, and were [then] followed up for 16 years. The women studied had no history of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or cancer as of 1980.
After adjusting the results of the study for a variety of factors including age, body mass index [BMI], family history of diabetes, physical activity, smoking, alcohol use, and total energy intake [all risk factors for developing diabetes], the authors suggest that eating greater amounts of nuts and peanut butter may have potential benefits ... in lowering risk of type 2 diabetes in women. The authors stress, however, that for women to avoid increasing the number of calories they consume, regular nut consumption can be recommended as a replacement for consumption of refined grain products or red or processed meats.
