Building a Better Understanding of Prostate Cancer. (... an article that reviews prostate cancer--what it is and, especially, the current burst of research activity and knowledge that aims at identifying the molecular/genetic basis of this cancer via the large-scale sequencing of genes expressed in the prostate. Of particular interest are those genes that are turned on or off as prostate cancer develops. The article states that the most immediate impact of all of this research activity is likely to be in the area of better and more precise diagnosis of prostate cancer--please see the bibliography of this article)

The Killing Fields: What Robbed the Americas of their Most Charismatic Mammals? (... a review of several current theories that attempt to explain why large numbers of species of mammals disappeared--in a relatively short period of time--about 11,000 to 12,000 years ago from North and South America. The article most extensively discusses a relatively new theory called the overkill hypothesis that asserts that the first groups of humans crossing into the Americas from Asia hunted the various species of large mammals into extinction. Another even more recent theory suggests that the humans [and/or the parasites that travel along with them] entering the Americas carried new diseases that played a greater role than hunting or substantial climate change in killing off the species of large mammals [like mammoths] so quickly)

Science News Volume 156, Number 23 (December 4, 1999): 360.

Life on Venus. (... an analysis of whether the past or present environment on the planet Venus was or is suitable for the existence of life. While conditions on the surface of Venus are extreme with a lack of liquid water and temperatures in excess of 460 degrees, conditions in parts of the atmosphere generate a more biologically favorable environment. The author concludes that conditions on the surface and in the atmosphere may have been greatly ameliorated on early Venus and may also be ameliorated on extrasolar planets with early Venus-like characteristics where temperatures are less extreme and liquid water is available and, thus, more favorable for the existence of life--from the abstract on the Planetary and Space Science Web site)

Planetary and Space Science Volume 47, Number 12 (December 15, 1999): 1487-1501.
