Risk Factors for Lung Cancer Among Nonsmoking Women. (... a study conducted in Germany between 1991 and 1996 that aimed to evaluate risk factors for lung cancer in nonsmoking women. The authors used samples of 234 women who were confirmed lung cancer patients and 535 women who did not have lung cancer and who had never smoked more than 400 cigarettes in their lifetime. All of the participating women were interviewed with respect to occupation, exposure to environmental tobacco smoke [ETS], family history of cancer, prior physician-diagnosed lung diseases or cancer and diet. In addition, one-year radon measurements in the last dwelling [where the women lived] were performed.
After analyzing the information obtained through the study, the authors concluded that exposure to environmental tobacco smoke while at work [and, to a lesser but still significant extent, exposure to ETS via a spouse who smokes], working more than 10 years in jobs or industries with known or suspected lung carcinogens, and previously having pneumonia or tuberculosis may all be risk factors for lung cancer in nonsmoking women. The authors also concluded that no significant increase in risk with increasing residential radon levels or with the presence of a family history of lung cancer was apparent. In addition, the results of the study also seemed to indicate that a diet rich in fresh vegetables and cheese appeared to have a protective effect among these women against the development of lung cancer.
