Bull Solution of Forest Health Problems With Prescribed Fire: Are Forest Productivity and Wildlife At Risk? (... the forests of the Blue Mountains of Oregon and Washington and Intermountain area [United States] have become increasingly vulnerable to damage by insects, diseases, and wildfire due to advanced succession of forest plants and increasing accumulations of biomass. One solution that has been proposed to improve the health of these forests is to return them on a large-scale to conditions approximating what is thought to have existed before widespread European settlement of this area. And, a tool that has been suggested for accomplishing this conversion is prescribed fire. The authors of this article urge caution and specifically examine the effects of prescribed fire on forest productivity and wildlife. The authors state rather than attempting to convert forests to poorly described and understood presettlement seral conditions, it would seem prudent to examine present forest conditions and assess their potential to provide desired resource outputs and values.
