Other Articles of Note: Holger Kirchmann and Gudni Thorvaldsson Challenging Targets for Future Agriculture. (... an interesting overview/review article with a European orientation on the future of agriculture. The authors discuss several quality components for agriculture which are a type of checklist of those factors that we should be aware of concerning protection of the environment, production of healthy food and the practice of good ethics and which can be integrated into the general aims of sustainable agriculture. Please see pages 153-155 for a discussion of organic farming and ways in which the authors point out the inability of organic farming methods to solve some of the major environmental problems faced by modern agriculture. The authors conclude that innovation, creative solutions and discoveries based on natural sciences will be helpful in the development of sustainable agriculture, but not methods based on dogmatism.
