Influence of Tillage System on Water Quality and Quantity in Prairie Pothole Wetlands. (... this article looks at the effect that different farming practices may have on prairie wetlands. In particular, tillage systems designed to assist in preventing soil erosion may also have negative effects depending upon how and where they are used.
In this study, the authors investigated zero tillage and conventional tillage practices used in the vicinity of prairie wetlands particularly in regard to the distribution, circulation, and quality of the water. The authors hypothesized that since zero tillage [ZT] requires more herbicide and fertilizer use than conventional tillage [CT] and may improve water infiltration into soil, the system may negatively impact prairie pothole wetlands.
The authors found that the wetland areas [studied from 1995 through 1998] using zero tillage generated more water runoff and resulted in lower water levels than a wetland in which conventional tillage was used. On the other hand, the authors found that neither tillage system had a consistent effect on the availability of nitrogen and phosphorus in the surface soil.
