(... a short article that defines Transgenics and briefly discusses several techniques for the production of a transgenic animal. The author states that all [the techniques] have the same primary objective, which is the successful integration of a functional sequence of a DNA strand [a transgene] into a chromosome within the host genome. The techniques decribed include Viral Vector-Mediated Transgene Introduction, Pronuclear-Mediated Transgene Introduction [Microinjection], Targeted Transgene Insertion by Homologous Recombination [Embryonic Stem Cell], and Cloning--all techniques that were in use at the time this article was written in 1999. This article is not necessarily easily understood, yet it does provide a solid, concise, and basic description of Transgenics and what it involves. As the author summarizes it is very difficult to anticipate or comprehend the ultimate impact that will result [from transgenic technologies]. Consequently, a basic understanding and appreciation of the science involved is essential to the critical assessment of these ideas.
