Committee on the Science of Climate Change, National Research Council (United States)

Climate Change Science: An Analysis of Some Key Questions. (... a recent report commissioned by President George Bush. This report characterizes the global warming trend over the last 100 years, and examines what may be in store for the 21st century and the extent to which warming may be attributable to human activity. The committee [who produced this report] was made up of 11 of the nation's [the United States] top climate scientists. Other keywords and phrases -- climate change, climate prediction, greenhouse effect -- from text taken off the A Closer Look at Global Warming Web site)

National Academy Press (June 2001): 36 pages.

**The complete text of the report is currently available through the Web site of the National Academy Press (the report is available in portable document format [PDF--which requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to be viewed] and in HTML. The report can also be purchased in paper format from the National Academy Press).**

**An associated Web site--A Closer Look at Global Warming--from the National Academy of Sciences is also available which summarizes the report and contains links to other useful Web sites.**

Human Health Consequences of Climate Variability and Change for the United States. (... the detailed, peer-reviewed studies and results that formed the foundation for an assessment of the health of United States citizens over the next 25-100 years that was part of a larger study done by the United States Global Change Research Program and published in November 2000 under the title Climate Change Impacts on the United States: The Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change. Other keywords and phrases -- greenhouse effect, global change, global warming, human health, human-induced, natural processes -- from the text of the Preface by Joel D. Scheraga; for access to the Preface, please see below)

Environmental Health Perspectives Volume 109, Supplement 2 (May 2001): 175-233.

**The complete text of the Preface and the 6 articles that make up this section of the Supplement is currently available through the Web site of Environmental Health Perspectives.**

National Center for Environmental Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (United States)

Investigation of Human Health Effects Associated with Potential Exposure to Genetically Modified Corn. (... in October 2000, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration [FDA] requested technical assistance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] in investigating adverse event reports of human illnesses that were potentially associated with consumption of genetically modified corn products--in particular, illnesses that were reported as a result of eating foods containing a protein named Cry9c [that] had been inserted into genetically modified StarLink™ corn.
After an investigation, the CDC concluded that 28 people had experienced apparent allergic reactions and had also reported eating corn products that may have contained Cry9c protein. Blood samples were provided by 17 of these individuals and, after an analysis of those blood samples, the investigators found that none of the CDC-submitted samples reacted in a manner consistent with an allergic response to the Cry9c protein and that these findings do not provide any evidence that the reactions that the affected people experienced were associated with hypersensitivity to the Cry9c protein.
The investigators added that the difficulties of this investigation highlight the importance of evaluating the allergic potential of genetically modified foods before they become available for human consumption. Other keywords and phrases -- ELISA, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, genetic engineering, gm -- from the Executive Summary of this report)

National Center for Environmental Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (June 11, 2001): 24 pages (in PDF).

**The complete text of the report is currently available through the Web site of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the report is available in portable document format [PDF--which requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to be viewed], WordPerfect format, and in HTML).**

H. A. Mooney and E. E. Cleland

The Evolutionary Impact of Invasive Species. (... an essay and a review of the scientific literature published since the late 1950's that looks at the mechanisms by which invasive species evolve in response to their new biotic and abiotic environments [aspects of the environment that arise from the activities of living organisms and nonliving factors (like climate and light), respectively--definition from this book], and how invasive species have altered the evolutionary trajectory of native species with which they interact. The authors conclude by saying the biota [plants and animals inhabiting a particular region--definition from this book] of the Earth is undergoing a dramatic transformation. The spatial patterning, structure, and functioning of most of the ecosystems of the world have been altered by the activities of humankind ... We are now developing a whole new cosmopolitan assemblage of organisms across the surface of the Earth with large consequences not only for the functioning of ecosystems but also for the future evolutionary trajectory of life. Other keywords and phrases -- biogeographic barriers, competition, competitive exclusion, exotic species, extinction, hybridization, introduced species, introgression, invaders, lag effect, migration, niche displacement, predation, predator, rate of change, rate of invasion -- from the text of the article)

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America Volume 98, Number 10 (May 8, 2001): 5446-5451.

**The complete text of the article is currently available through the Web site of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America**
