Potential Impacts of Global Climate Changes on the Establishment and Spread of Invasive Species. (... a review article that includes a concise overview of global climate change, the general impacts of natural climate swings in the geologic past, the anticipated impacts of future global warming, the impacts of global warming on biodiversity, the migration of species in the wake of global climate change, and more.
A particularly interesting part of the article is its overview of invasive plants, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and other organisms in North America. After a review of their current numbers, the author describes 12 impacts of invasive species under current climatic conditions. These 12 impacts range from physical destruction of the environment and competition with native species for resources to causing more frequent and more intense fires to which native species are not adapted and promoting extinctions. The author then goes on to predict the impacts of invasive species in the wake of global climate change.
The author concludes by saying that human induced biological invasions are seriously altering the world's biogeographical realms at an unprecedented rate. In the long term, biological invasions will combine with other atmospheric and land use changes to have dramatic impacts on native ecosystems, agriculture and the quality of human life.
