Will Bt-Based Pest Resistance Management Plans Work? (... a review of the controversy over the planting and use of genetically modified crops--especially those crops that produce their own pesticides by incorporating genes from a bacteria, Bacillus thuringiensis [Bt], that is found in the soil; the article also looks at how the policies of the EPA [United States Environmental Protection Agency] in regard to these crops are changing as the crops are more widely adopted and as scientific knowledge about their effects upon the environment evolves)

Environmental Science & Technology Volume 33, Number 19 (October 1, 1999): 410 A-415 A.

Formation of Cycloidal Features on Europa. (... a pattern of cracks observed on the icy surface of Jupiter's moon, Europa, may provide evidence for the existence of a thick layer of water below the ice)

Science Volume 285, Number 5435 (September 17, 1999): 1899-1902.

Study Finding Perchlorate in Fertilizer Rattles Industry. (... perchlorate--an unregulated environmental contaminant--affects the thyroid and the production of thyroid hormones by blocking iodine uptake. These effects can cause mental retardation in unborn children and infants and thyroid tumors. This article provides an overview of the environmental effects of perchlorate and a recent EPA [U.S. Environmental Protection Agency] study that preliminarily discovered high concentrations of perchlorate in commonly available garden fertilizers. The Fertilizer Institute [TFI]--representing fertilizer manufacturers--has suggested that the EPA results are flawed; the article also reports on the observations of several scientists who question or support the results--from the text of the article on the Environmental Science & Technology Web site)

Environmental Science & Technology Volume 33, Number 19 (October 1, 1999): 394 A-395 A.

Thyroid Linked to Some Frog Defects. (... an overview of recent research that strives to pinpoint the causes of deformities in frogs that have been widely observed across North America in the last several years; the results of the two studies indicate that pollutants in lake water may be interfering with the thyroid hormones that are crucial to the development of frogs and that the occurrence of certain pesticides in the water may be linked to specific deformities. Research is now indicating that no single agent can explain all frog malformations worldwide--from the text of the article on the Science News Web site; see the bibliography attached to this article)

Science News Volume 156, Number 14 (October 2, 1999): 212.

Review: Pharmacologic Treatment of Depression During Pregnancy. (... a review of 4 studies [selected through searches of relevant medical databases, the bibliographies of review articles, and discussions with known researchers for the past 10 years] published since 1993 regarding the effects of treatments for depression during pregnancy; while these studies do provide some welcome information in contrast to the lack of data that physicians and patients have faced in the past, there is a definite need for much more research in this area in order to pin down risks and benefits; fluoxetine, Prozac, pregnant, women)

JAMA--The Journal of the American Medical Association Volume 282, Number 13 (October 6, 1999)
